Why do you detest the Conservatives?

by johnfarrandrogers on 30 March, 2023

This is a question that somebody asked me recently.
The short answer is that I don’t. What I detest is what their leaders have been doing to the country in recent years. Previously, I disagreed with some of their policies, though some then were reasonable enough. What they have been doing recently is not just deplorable, it is an utter disgrace.
Somebody asked recently what the Conservatives were for… What are they trying to conserve? Certainly not the NHS, where their hidden policy is to destroy it. Certainly not farming, where we have lost access to markets, workers and financial support. Certainly not local government, which they have overloaded with responsibilities and kept short of funding. Nor the justice system …..
The only thing that the Conservatives want to conserve is the wealth of the already extremely wealthy.
But hating their policies is not the same as hating Conservative voters. That would make no sense at all. For a start, a lot of my relatives were Conservatives – I even had an uncle who was a Conservative alderman! This made for interesting family gatherings….
I parted company with family tradition when I went to a Conservative election meeting and was disgusted by their complacency and indifference towards the misfortunes of others, both in this country and abroad. I started looking at the alternatives.
There are a large number of people in this country who could easily vote either Conservative or Lib Dem, depending on circumstances. Currently, a lot of people now are tending Lib Dem, having been turned off the Conservatives by Boris Johnson and his antics, and more recently by the report about former cabinet ministers offering their services for £10,000 a day! Former Cabinet ministers… No self-respect… No shame…
Similarly, there is another large pool of people who could vote either Labour or Lib Dem. There is no such thing as a safe seat, as recent byelections have shown. So the question boils down to: What are you trying to do with your vote? What outcome do you want in an election?
