Tories aim to make Devon Council even more Ineffective

by johnfarrandrogers on 2 November, 2014

News comes in that the Boundary Commission is starting a review of the electoral divisions of Devon County Council. Their starting point is to reduce the number of divisions to 60. Apparently the Conservatives wanted to cut the number of seats even more. But just look at the implications…

Any reduction in the number of divisions means that their size increases proportionally. There is a greater area and a greater workload for each county councillor.

Consider, then, one service for which the Conservatives have not managed to hive off: road repairs. How many people think that the County Council has been doing a good job maintaining our road surfaces? Hardly anybody. So the County councillors, who are supposed to keep an eye on their division, are now going to be asked to look after an even larger area.

If they cannot do it now, that is either because they are incompetent, or their area is aleady too big for them to look after properly. And yet the Conservatie want to make it even larger!

One sometimes gets the impression that the Conservatives just do not know what they are doing. Or else they are doing it deliberately, as a wrecking move…..
